FIVE:V - The Echo Society

Our fifth event, "V", will take place in the historic Theatre at Ace Hotel in DTLA on Wednesday, August 31, 2016. Our most ambitious project to date, "V" will feature new works by the Echo Society collective alongside guest collaborators Clark, The Haxan Cloak, Ted Hearne, and Chelsea Wolfe.

V, or five, evokes freedom and symbolizes matter with the subtle addition of spirit. It moves beyond restrictions.

Each ES composer and special guest s presenting an as-of-yet unheard piece written specifically for our largest ensemble of LA musicians yet, and in our most exciting and immersive performance to date. In addition to the evocative video projections by our frequent collaborator EFFIXX (creator of our “Bloom” and “Veils” aesthetic), the show’s lighting will be created by the ground-breaking visual designer Tobias Rylander of Seven Design.

Pageant of the Masters

Pageant of the Masters
Where Art Comes To Life!

The Pageant of the Masters is the Festival of Arts’ crowning jewel and arguably one of the most unique productions in the entire world. It is world-renowned in the artistry and theatrical illusion of living pictures. Each night during the summer season at 8:30 the Festival of Arts presents this famous attraction.

What is it?
A ninety-minute stage show of “living pictures” – incredibly faithful art re-creations of classical and contemporary works with real people posing to look exactly like their counterparts in the original pieces. An outdoor amphitheater, professional orchestra, original score, live narration, intricate sets, sophisticated lighting, expert staff, and hundreds of dedicated volunteers have won recognition for the Pageant as the best presentation of its kind.

wildUp premieres David Lang | Anatomy Theater at LA Opera

We’re thrilled to be making our LA Opera Debut in the world premiere of David Lang’s Anatomy Theater!

Based on actual 18th-century texts, Anatomy Theater follows the astonishing progression of an English murderess: from confession to execution and, ultimately, public dissection before a paying audience of fascinated onlookers. Through the miracle of opera, she sings through it all.

Anatomy Theater conjures a time when “specialists” traveled from town to town in pre-modern Europe, conducting public dissections of the corpses of executed criminals, seeking evidence of moral corruption in the interior of the human body. Written by Pulitzer Prize–winning composer David Lang and world-renowned visual artist Mark Dion,Anatomy Theater is a joyous, tuneful and grisly theatrical event.

wasteLAnd presents: SUBTERRANEAN TRACINGS

Our season 3 finale presents premieres of three pieces written for the same ensemble. Last season, we experienced the “Octandre” ensemble filtered through the lens of Ferneyhough with an added soloist. For this concert, a new concerto has been composed, replacing the violin soloist with the incredible cellist Ashley Walters, and adding a tuba to further warp the personality of this instrumentation. Context for the premieres is offered by two older works by Jason Eckardt and Georges Aperghis, both of whom can create all of the tension and surprise of an ensemble with only one or two performers.

Southeast Symphony presents CARMINA BURANA

"Orff's music has been regularly performed, yet paradoxically, it is little known.  The reason is that his reputation rests almost exclusively on this one composition, Carmina Burana.  That single splendid work, which we hear at these performances, catapulted Orff to international fame in 1937.  It is such thrilling music that it has remained in the standard repertoire ever since.  Orff's other stage and choral compositions are curiosities that are infrequently recorded and rarely performed.  His most enduring legacy other than Carmina Burana is the educational materials he developed for schoolchildren.  Carmina remains his crowning achievement as a composer.
